After World War II much of Europe lay in ruins. Germany was destroyed, France and England were exhausted. The United States and the Soviet Union (USSR) emerged as the two global superpowers and they faced off in what is called the Cold War. The Soviet Union dominated Eastern Europe and the U.S. rebuilt western Europe. The USSR represented communism while the US represented democracy and capitalism. The world began to be divided into two camps and each side tried to spread their influence. In this section we will learn how former allies, the U.S. and the USSR built massive militaries and powerful economies and became butter rivals. They competed for dominance, allies and to spread their ideals.
