In this section we will be studying imperialism. After the industrial revolution in Europe the European nations: Britain, France, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Germany, Netherlands, and other nations, built very powerful economies. In order to continue to fuel their rapid growth, they looked to Africa and its rich natural resources. European powers met at a special meeting in Berlin, in which they "carved-up" Africa between them. The most powerful nations, such as France and Britain took the best lands and lesser powers received smaller parts. Although the Empires of Europe brought modern technology, education, and medicine to parts of Africa, they also brought misery and cruelty to the people that lived there. Many of todays problems can be traced back to the European colonization of Africa. Scramble for Africa/Berlin Conference: Video |
