Historians look back to the end of World War I, and the flawed peace agreement at the Treaty of Versailles, as a direct cause for the rise of dictators and eventually World War II. We study these two topics next. After World War I, Germany was severely punished. It was forced to sign a 'Guilt Clause" directly blaming Germany for the war. Although Germany was certainly not the "good guy" many historians agree that the punishment of Germany was too severe. The German economy collapsed, land was taken away, and Germany was not allowed to have most modern weapons. It was also forced to pay reparations and was further humiliated. In this section we will explore how that happened. We will also learn how U.S. President Woodrow Wilson tried to establish a peace plan called "The Fourteen Points."
