World War II: As dictators took power in Germany and Italy, they began to to become more aggressive. Germany and Italy began taking over lands and were unchallenged by other countries in Europe. They tried a strategy of appeasement, thinking it would satisfy the demands of Hitler and Mussolini.
It did not. As war broke out, the world was not prepared for the military machine that Hitler and Mussolini had developed. Finally, in 1939, after Nazi Germany invaded Poland, Britain, France and other nations new that Hitler must be stopped. Meanwhile, in the Pacific, Japan was building a massive island empire and threatening to expand closer toward the United States. Japan had built a very powerful economy and an enormous military. Their Navy was so powerful they thought they could deliver a knock out punch to the United States by attacking her navy at Peal Harbor. We will learn about this and more in our World War II unit.
