Because of the Alliance system, countries were forced to declare war on one another. Military technology had created very deadly weapons and the war became the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen. The Triple Alliance, changed its name to the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire) fought the Allied powers (Great Britain, France and Russia) The United States entered the war later and sided with the Allied powers. Germany devised a plan called the Schlieffen Plan. Germany did not want to fight a two front war, so it took a gamble and attacked France, hoping to defeat it quickly. Then it turned to Russia in hopes of knocking it out of the war. The plan failed and Germany was forced to fight a two front war.
